Scientist - Physical Chemistry Nucleic Acids

We are currently seeking to expand our team with a motivated and proactive Scientist – Physical Chemistry Nucleic Acids (f/m/d) to support our R&D team with biomolecule separation, microfluidics and general molecular biology skills.

This position is externally funded by a 3-year project financed by the FFG. The successful candidate will join a small, agile and interdisciplinary team as soon as possible. Your everyday challenge in Ribbon Biolabs will be:

  • Design capillary electrophoresis systems for separation, quantification and purification of nucleic acids
  • Design, optimize, carry out and trouble shoot analytic and preparative experiments of physical chemistry of nucleic acids.
  • Establish new workflows as well as quality control systems
  • Perform duties of lab management, maintain lab documentation, write reports and assist with grant writing

Automation Application Scientist

 

We are currently seeking to expand our team with a motivated and proactive Automation Application Scientist to join our highly agile and interdisciplinary team.

In this role, you will report to the CTO with regards to the establishment and utilization of laboratory automation infrastructure to support synthetic biology pipeline processes. Thereby, you will have the opportunity to contribute to the empowerment of the core technology of the company through robotic automation and associated process miniaturization and parallelization.

Your roles and responsibilities at Ribbon Biolabs:

  • Advance the establishment, operation and ongoing evolution of robotic infrastructure in support of pipeline automation of the synthetic biology workflows in the lab, including liquid handling instrumentation and diverse associated equipment
  • Manage and maintain all operational processes associated to laboratory automation, including data processing and instrument maintenance
  • Design and direct the development of automation applications of lab processes
  • Plan automation scheduling of high throughput projects
  • Testing and debugging of automation script
  • Lead automation projects to completion
  • Train and supervise other staff
  • Collaborate with other team members to support lab operations, meeting goals and deadlines

Your educational background, experience, and skills:

  • At least Master’s degree level or equivalent experience, with a strong track-record in hands-on wet-lab experience
  • Prior experience in the operation of robotic automated liquid handler instrumentation is essential
  • Experience and knowledge with the programming of robotic liquid handlers and the processing, management and analysis of associated data is required
  • Experience in developing automation applications
  • Experience in automation process development and pipeline planning
  • At least 3 years’ experience in molecular biology, biochemistry or equivalent
  • Experience with high-content, automated biobanking is a plus
  • Experience in a relevant industry research setting is a plus
  • Organizational and project management skills, accuracy, reliability and precision also under time pressure

Computational Biology Developer

 

We are currently seeking to expand our team with a motivated and proactive Computational Biology Developer to contribute to the company’s technology

through the development of the advanced algorithmic core of its proprietary DNA Synthesis platform including robotic automation integration, high-throughput data analysis, machine learning and predictive modeling applications.

The primary responsibility of the successful candidate will be the development of advanced algorithms that combine bioprocesses, machine learning, simulations, and optimization to drive our DNA synthesis performance. The candidate must have computational background and a solid knowledge of biology. The work is highly integrated with other aspects of Ribbon’s technology (wet lab & hardware), so the candidate ought to be a flexible and adaptable team player with a cooperative attitude.

Your roles and responsibilities at Ribbon Biolabs:

  • Development of Ribbon’s core algorithmic workflows and associated applications
  • Develop and contribute models, simulations, and analyses (statistical, mathematical, etc.)
  • Apply and develop advanced data analysis techniques, including but not limited to statistics, machine learning, etc.
  • Script writing for integration of Ribbon’s system components (workflows, robotic automation pipeline, databases and inventories, APIs, etc.)

Lab Technician

Lab Technician – Molecular Biology

At Ribbon Biolabs we are taking synthetic biology to the next level!

We are currently seeking to expand our team with a motivated and proactive Lab Technician to support our R&D and production team with Molecular Biology skills.

We seek a to hire a responsible, flexible and dedicated candidate, who can integrate into our diverse team and help to establish and operate our DNA synthesis pipeline. The Lab Technician will support the team with preparations, assays, experiments and the application of Standard Operating Procedures by using molecular biology techniques as well as by the basic duties of lab maintenance.

We are running a new, state-of-the art laboratory at IST Park in Klosterneuburg and our association with IST Austria allows for access to their scientific services and facilities. The new laboratory in Vienna will serve a key role in translating our R&D operations in Klosterneuburg into actionable products serving our customers worldwide.

Vienna Lab Manager – QC & Downstream Processing

We are currently seeking to expand our team with a motivated and proactive Vienna Lab Manager to facilitate our operations in Vienna (VLM).

The new lab in Vienna will focus on quality control (QC) and downstream production processes and will have a crucial role for the translation of R&D outcome to the markets and our customers. Thereby, you will have the opportunity to enable our early customer business operations through ensuring adequate and high-quality QC and downstream processing to allow timely delivery of high-quality DNA products to our customers. You should combine demonstrated expertise in molecular biology, biochemistry or related areas, with proven expertise using relevant analytical techniques and instrumentation as well as laboratory management experience. Experience with DNA manipulation and analytical technologies in a scientific environment is a key requirement.

Your roles and responsibilities at Ribbon Biolabs:

  • Assist with establishment, operation and further adaptation of new laboratory site specialized on QC analytics of our DNA products, as well as on downstream processing, such as bacterial cloning and plasmid DNA extraction processing according to customers’ specifications.
  • Manage and maintain the lab’s processes associated to QC and downstream processing, including SOP writing and updating, data management and instrument maintenance routines.
  • Support the molecular biology / biochemical platforms and diverse pipeline programs.
  • Perform procedures on DNA quality control and/or downstream processing, including molecular cloning, ligation, plasmid DNA purification, amplification (qualitative and quantitative PCR), DNA quantification by gel-electrophoresis / spectrophotometry / fluorescence / capillary electrophoresis and preparation for QC by sequencing (Sanger / NGS).
  • Prepare solutions, reagents and glassware including cleaning and sterilization as required for the daily operations of the laboratory.
  • Ensure laboratory management, procurement and maintenance, including the monitoring and ordering of consumable stock items, laboratory equipment maintenance and cleaning, chemical and biological waste disposal according to Safety Procedures and record-keeping, assistance with laboratory emergencies and associated incident records, reporting and problem-solving.

Your educational background, experience, and skills:

  • At least Master’s degree level or equivalent experience.
  • A strong track-record in molecular biology, biochemistry or equivalent wet-lab experience.
  • Up-to-date command on laboratory analytical technologies for DNA QC and downstream processing, including DNA extraction and purification, PCR, qPCR, spectrophotometric readouts, electrophoresis (gel/capillary), sequencing (Sanger/NGS) and library preparation.
  • At least one-year proven experience in independent / senior laboratory management role.
  • Experience and knowledge with quality control and GLP/GMP regulations is preferred.
  • Experience in an industry research setting is considered a plus.
  • Organizational skills, accuracy, reliability and precision also under time pressure.
  • Positive can-do attitude, willingness to work cooperatively in a small team, and with an inclusive mindset and the natural drive to work towards goals.
  • Good communication skills and highly proactive working culture in liaising with an international customer base.
  • Excellent written and spoken English language skills. Basic German language is of advantage.

ABOUT RIBBON BIOLABS

Ribbon Biolabs is a small biotech company with locations in Vienna and in Klosterneuburg (outskirts of Vienna) focused on developing the next technological wave of error-proof DNA synthesis for synthetic biology applications. With our approach, we are developing a cost-efficient platform to produce long and complex DNA molecules, thereby enabling a new generation of biopharmaceutical processes and other synthetic biology products.

Ribbon Biolabs counts with multiple sources of funding including public grants and VC equity from tecnet equity and IST Cube (the investment fund of the world-renowned Institute of Science & Technology – IST Austria, ranked third worldwide by Nature in the “Nature Index 2019”). We are running a new, state-of-the art laboratory at IST Park in Klosterneuburg and our association with IST Austria allows for access to their scientific services and facilities. A new laboratory in Vienna will serve a key role for quality control (QC) and for translating our R&D results obtained in Klosterneuburg into actionable products to serve our customers worldwide.

YOUR OPPORTUNITY

With the start of the new decade, we are looking for a driven Internship Student to join Ribbon’s scientific team in assisting us with skilled hands and fresh ideas in solving key challenges in our R&D pipeline establishment for automated production of synthetic DNA. Specifically, the Intern will help with the optimization of the core molecular biology pipeline protocol, optimizing the utilization of bead-based purification and nucleic acid amplification technologies towards optimized yield and purity of our synthetic DNA products. The successful candidate will join a small but highly agile and interdisciplinary team as soon as possible and will have the unique opportunity to experience research in a young and dynamic biotech startup company.

Through the internship, you will have the opportunity to contribute to the R&D work in the lab by supporting the experimental development of the molecular biology pipeline for synthetic DNA production, biochemical protocol optimization and translation to robotic automated assembly in cooperation with the scientists in the team. This will be achieved by active mentoring and learning with our scientists through assisting them with diverse laboratory – relevant tasks. You can gain expertise on performing experiments on DNA assembly, molecular cloning, DNA purification, amplification (qualitative and quantitative PCR), DNA quantification through different analytical techniques (e.g. gel-electrophoresis / spectrophotometry / fluorescence / capillary electrophoresis) and preparation of sequencing (Sanger / NGS).

The candidate should have as many of the following educational background, experience, or skills:

Bachelor’s degree (or equivalent experience).

Educational background with hands-on wet-lab experience in molecular biology, biochemistry, synthetic biology or equivalent.

Coding and/or bioinformatic data analysis training.

Accuracy, reliability and precision in practical research setups.

Can-do attitude, inclusive mindset and the motivation to experience industry research.

Team player with good communication skills.

Excellent written and spoken English language skills. German language is of advantage.
