Computational Biology Developer

 

We are currently seeking to expand our team with a motivated and proactive Computational Biology Developer to contribute to the company’s technology

through the development of the advanced algorithmic core of its proprietary DNA Synthesis platform including robotic automation integration, high-throughput data analysis, machine learning and predictive modeling applications.

The primary responsibility of the successful candidate will be the development of advanced algorithms that combine bioprocesses, machine learning, simulations, and optimization to drive our DNA synthesis performance. The candidate must have computational background and a solid knowledge of biology. The work is highly integrated with other aspects of Ribbon’s technology (wet lab & hardware), so the candidate ought to be a flexible and adaptable team player with a cooperative attitude.

The successful candidate will join a small but growing, agile and interdisciplinary team as soon as possible and will have the opportunity to grow with the company. Ribbon Biolabs counts with multiple sources of funding including public grants and VC equity.

Your roles and responsibilities at Ribbon Biolabs:

  • Development of Ribbon’s core algorithmic workflows and associated applications
  • Develop and contribute models, simulations, and analyses (statistical, mathematical, etc.)
  • Apply and develop advanced data analysis techniques, including but not limited to statistics, machine learning, etc.
  • Script writing for integration of Ribbon’s system components (workflows, robotic automation pipeline, databases and inventories, APIs, etc.)
  • Maintenance and documentation of algorithms, workflows and software applications
  • Keep version control of developed packages and SOP writing
  • Perform direct and/or coordinate bioinformatics analyses such as on sequencing data
  • Propose and innovate bioinformatic products and drive associated development plans
  • Contribute to the intellectual property of the company and ensure computational resources are secure and well-maintained
  • Support grant writing and reporting

Your educational background, experience and skills:

  • Background in Computational Biology, Computer Science, or alike
  • Deep knowledge of Wolfram Mathematica is a must
  • Statistical and machine learning methodologies
  • Programming skills including: Bash scripting, Python, Java, R or similar
  • Knowledge of bioinformatics packages such as R/Bioconductor, Vienna RNA Package, etc. are a plus
  • Flexible, coachable and adaptable, and openness to adopting new languages/technologies
  • Able to work confidently and reliably both unsupervised as well as part of a team
  • Perfect English language

Lab Technician

Lab Technician – Molecular Biology

At Ribbon Biolabs we are taking synthetic biology to the next level!

We are currently seeking to expand our team with a motivated and proactive Lab Technician to support our R&D and production team with Molecular Biology skills.

We seek a to hire a responsible, flexible and dedicated candidate, who can integrate into our diverse team and help to establish and operate our DNA synthesis pipeline. The Lab Technician will support the team with preparations, assays, experiments and the application of Standard Operating Procedures by using molecular biology techniques as well as by the basic duties of lab maintenance.

Ribbon Biolabs counts with multiple sources of funding including public grants and VC equity from tecnet equity and IST Cube (the investment fund of the world-renowned Institute of Science & Technology – IST Austria, ranked third worldwide by Nature in the “Nature Index 2019”). We are running a new, state-of-the art laboratory at IST Park in Klosterneuburg and our association with IST Austria allows for access to their scientific services and facilities. The new laboratory in Vienna will serve a key role in translating our R&D operations in Klosterneuburg into actionable products serving our customers worldwide.

The successful candidate will join a small, agile and interdisciplinary team as soon as possible. The candidate will have the opportunity to grow with the company and to live and work in or near the city of Vienna, which is repeatedly ranked by Mercer as the city with the highest quality of life in the world.

Your roles and responsibilities at Ribbon Biolabs:

  • Perform experiments including DNA, purification, PCR, ligation, DNA quantification, electrophoresis
  • Preparation of solutions, organise plasticware, clean/sterilise glassware
  • Taking care of machine maintenance, lab maintenance, monitor stocks
  • Maintain lab documentation
  • Produce, document data, which he/she can either analyse or pass to team members for analysis
  • Assist R&D and automation platform team members (with reagents, plasticware and experiments)

Further responsibilities include procurement related activities (monitoring of stocks, placing orders, working on agreements and discounts with vendors, monitoring the market for better/cheaper product alternatives, inventory keeping, order documentation etc.

The candidate should have the following educational background, experience, and skills:

  • Previous experience as lab technician
  • Enzymatic essays with DNA such as: PCR, PCR optimisation, PCR and gel purification, Bead purification, DNA assembly, ligation, Golden Gate, etc., Electrophoresis (agarose, acrylamide, capillary), and related techniques.
  • Confident bench work and pipetting skills (able to follow complicated protocol designs, handle many samples and reagents simultaneously)
  • Immaculate and thorough laboratory work documentation skills
  • Data handling (data production, storage, archiving)
  • Fluent use of Microsoft Excel/Power Point/Word etc
  • Able to work confidently and reliably both unsupervised as well as part of a team
  • Prior experience with standard operating procedures (SOPs)
  • Self-driven and organized team-worker
  • Fast problem solving and multi-tasking skills with the ability to prioritize
  • Adaptability to change
  • Good communication
  • Perfect English language (written and spoken)

Lab Manager
Vienna Lab Manager – QC & Downstream Processing

At Ribbon Biolabs, we are taking synthetic biology to the next level!

We are currently seeking to expand our team with a motivated and proactive Vienna Lab Manager to facilitate our operations in Vienna (VLM).

The new lab in Vienna will focus on quality control (QC) and downstream production processes and will have a crucial role for the translation of R&D outcome to the markets and our customers. Thereby, you will have the opportunity to enable our early customer business operations through ensuring adequate and high-quality QC and downstream processing to allow timely delivery of high-quality DNA products to our customers. You should combine demonstrated expertise in molecular biology, biochemistry or related areas, with proven expertise using relevant analytical techniques and instrumentation as well as laboratory management experience. Experience with DNA manipulation and analytical technologies in a scientific environment is a key requirement.

Your roles and responsibilities at Ribbon Biolabs:

  • Assist with establishment, operation and further adaptation of new laboratory site specialized on QC analytics of our DNA products, as well as on downstream processing, such as bacterial cloning and plasmid DNA extraction processing according to customers’ specifications.
  • Manage and maintain the lab’s processes associated to QC and downstream processing, including SOP writing and updating, data management and instrument maintenance routines.
  • Support the molecular biology / biochemical platforms and diverse pipeline programs.
  • Perform procedures on DNA quality control and/or downstream processing, including molecular cloning, ligation, plasmid DNA purification, amplification (qualitative and quantitative PCR), DNA quantification by gel-electrophoresis / spectrophotometry / fluorescence / capillary electrophoresis and preparation for QC by sequencing (Sanger / NGS).
  • Prepare solutions, reagents and glassware including cleaning and sterilization as required for the daily operations of the laboratory.
  • Ensure laboratory management, procurement and maintenance, including the monitoring and ordering of consumable stock items, laboratory equipment maintenance and cleaning, chemical and biological waste disposal according to Safety Procedures and record-keeping, assistance with laboratory emergencies and associated incident records, reporting and problem-solving.

Your educational background, experience, and skills:

  • At least Master’s degree level or equivalent experience.
  • A strong track-record in molecular biology, biochemistry or equivalent wet-lab experience.
  • Up-to-date command on laboratory analytical technologies for DNA QC and downstream processing, including DNA extraction and purification, PCR, qPCR, spectrophotometric readouts, electrophoresis (gel/capillary), sequencing (Sanger/NGS) and library preparation.
  • At least one-year proven experience in independent / senior laboratory management role.
  • Experience and knowledge with quality control and GLP/GMP regulations is preferred.
  • Experience in an industry research setting is considered a plus.
  • Organizational skills, accuracy, reliability and precision also under time pressure.
  • Positive can-do attitude, willingness to work cooperatively in a small team, and with an inclusive mindset and the natural drive to work towards goals.
  • Good communication skills and highly proactive working culture in liaising with an international customer base.
  • Excellent written and spoken English language skills. Basic German language is of advantage.

The office management and preparation work for bookkeeping will be also in the successful candidate’s responsibility.

  • Support project management (grants and customer projects, set-up of PM structures and tools etc.)

YOUR OPPORTUNITY

With the start of the new decade, we are looking for a driven Internship Student to join Ribbon’s scientific team in assisting us with skilled hands and fresh ideas in solving key challenges in our R&D pipeline establishment for automated production of synthetic DNA. Specifically, the Intern will help with the optimization of the core molecular biology pipeline protocol, optimizing the utilization of bead-based purification and nucleic acid amplification technologies towards optimized yield and purity of our synthetic DNA products. The successful candidate will join a small but highly agile and interdisciplinary team as soon as possible and will have the unique opportunity to experience research in a young and dynamic biotech startup company.

Through the internship, you will have the opportunity to contribute to the R&D work in the lab by supporting the experimental development of the molecular biology pipeline for synthetic DNA production, biochemical protocol optimization and translation to robotic automated assembly in cooperation with the scientists in the team. This will be achieved by active mentoring and learning with our scientists through assisting them with diverse laboratory – relevant tasks. You can gain expertise on performing experiments on DNA assembly, molecular cloning, DNA purification, amplification (qualitative and quantitative PCR), DNA quantification through different analytical techniques (e.g. gel-electrophoresis / spectrophotometry / fluorescence / capillary electrophoresis) and preparation of sequencing (Sanger / NGS).

The candidate should have as many of the following educational background, experience, or skills:

Bachelor’s degree (or equivalent experience).

Educational background with hands-on wet-lab experience in molecular biology, biochemistry, synthetic biology or equivalent.

Coding and/or bioinformatic data analysis training.

Accuracy, reliability and precision in practical research setups.

Can-do attitude, inclusive mindset and the motivation to experience industry research.

Team player with good communication skills.

Excellent written and spoken English language skills. German language is of advantage.
